Password Protecting Directories

Password protecting directories allow access to certain pages or sections of your website only to those you give the password to. An easy way to make a free members-only section of your website!

To password protect a directory:

  • Login into your cPanel and in the Security menu, click on the Password Protect Directories icon.
  • Choose Web Root (and you may need to select Show Hidden Files)
  • Click on the name of the directory that you wish to password protect.
  • Check the box for "Password protect this directory:"
  • Fill in "Name the protected directory". This is just the message that will show to visitors when they try to login and can be anything you like.
  • Click on Save button below.
  • Click "Go Back"
  • Fill in a Username and Password at the bottom of the page, and click "Add/modify authorized user".
  • You're done. The directory you selected is now protected by a password.

In this way you can assign one universal user name and password or assign them individually by adding more authorized users.

Please note that no password-protected directory is ever totally safe from hackers. Someone with enough skill and determination can break into any directory anywhere.
