About Meta Tags and Page Titles
|
Properly used, Meta Tags and Page Titles, while not a magical solution, can greatly enhance SEO (search engine optimization). Meta tags contain information and are inserted into the "head" section of any HTML document. This information is not seen by viewers of your web page. Instead, it's used to communicate information to browsers, search engines, etc. Page Titles Though it's not techinically a Meta Tag, a Page Title is crucial to SEO. Whatever is placed there is seen in the reverse bar of the viewer's browser window (look at the very top left corner of your borwser and you'll see it there). The text used in your Title tags is one of the most important factors search engines now use when determining your placement. It's also the text that will appear when a viewer adds your site to their bookmarks or favorites list and will display in search engine listings under the link to your site. Your Title tag should be comprised of your key search terms, incorporated in a short, descriptive fashion. Other Tags Another tag to be considered is Description. Some search engines ignore this tag but it's still worthwhile to use. The Description tag is exactly as it sounds, a short and concise description of each particular web page. Keywords is a mostly depricated tag. Few search engines notice these tags at this point. if you choose to use Keywords, it's best to use only a few key search terms in this tag. |
