HotLink Protection

HotLink protection prevents other websites from directly linking to files on your website, specifically image files.

An example of hotlinking would be using a tag to display an image from your site somewhere else on the net. The end result is that the other site is stealing your bandwidth. ANA recommends enabling HotLink protection on any website.

Your cPanel makes it easy to enable HotLink protection:

  • From cPanel, uner the Security menu, click on the "HotLink Protection" icon
  • Make sure any website you want to allow access to your files is included in the lower box. This is usually just your own site.
  • Make sure the correct file extensions you want to protect are listed. Usually jpg gif png, etc.
  • Click enable

Please note that if you're using a flash player to display your photos or other content, enabling HotLink protection will prevent your images from being displayed in Firefox. This is one of the few bugs with that browser and one with no available fixes.
